Former Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh, credited with putting the India economy on the global map, has been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi for treatment. A 87 year old Congress leader was said to have been admitted in cardio-thoracic centre of AIIMS on Sunday evening.

These news are quite popular in the political context as well as among the wider population. The two main political leaders are – Dr Manmohan Singh, who was the prime minister of India for ten years from 2004-2014 is highly acclaimed to have made huge contributions in the India’s economic development and policies. He is honored with the responsibility of having liberalized the Indian economy and initiating its growth process.

The hospital authority of AIIMS has issued a statement where has informed that Dr Manmohan Singh is stable and is on close monitor. He was diagnosed and attended to by specialists, and he should be up and running again soon. After his shooting on 27th April 2017 at the authorities’ hands, the hospital treating him has not released out details about his state since they consider patient rights to privacy.

But this is not the first time that the former Prime Minister has been admitted to AIIMS in New Delhi. He had been admitted to the same hospital in mid May with a diagnosis of mild fever, COVID-19 negative. He was admitted in AIIMS for a coronary bypass operation which he had in the first quarter of 2009.

Hospitisalisation of Dr Manmohan Singh has raised concern andget well messages from politicians, celebrities , and the society in general. People flooded social media asking for prayers as he recuperated from the ailment that endangered his life. Politicians like Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Finance diva Nirmala Sitharaman and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwi also supported the brigade.
This development also wakes up concern over proper health care centre for our leaders as well as politicians. In a country where they cannot even ensure adequate heath care facilities, these leaders of this nation should be availed the best enabling heath facilities. Originally recognized as the premier medical college of the country, AIIMS has been serving this function for quite long.

This is also a sorry sight for senior citizens who are part of the distressed population because of the ongoing pandemic. So people of old age require protection and are likely get COVID – 19 infected; thus, they should be well taken care of. Likewise the message that Dr Manmohan Singh is admitted to hospital due to illness should also make every pragmatic to first put on a face masks for the protection of not only self but others too.

The same question would be that how we desire good health facilities in our country when one as influential as the former prime minister has to be treated in a foreign hospital. Some may believe that some specific event sufficiently educates and motivates the populace on the problem associated with the health care system and the poor state of related facilities and equipment in our government owned health care centers; for a person as highly estimable as Dr Manmohan Singh to need to treat himself in one of these health centers. It should also compel our leaders to address existing acute health care crisis as well as challenge them into putting their effort into improving health care system of the nation.
